Isabella en Beatrice D'Este zijn 2 zussen van de Italiaanse adel in Ferrara. Terwijl Beatrice het lelijke eendje is en van paardrijden en boogschieten houdt, is Isabella de meer vrouwelijke schone van de familie. Isabella huwt met de knappe en charmante markies van Mantua terwijl Beatrice wordt uitgehuwelijkt aan de machtige en rijke maar wat oudere Ludovico Sforza. Isabella is stiekem jaloers op haar zus Beatrice die zich in weelde en rijkdom kan wentelen. Leonardo Da Vinci is in dienst bij Ludovica Sforza, als ingenieur en architect, kunstenaar en oorlogsdeskundige. Isabella hoopt op een dag dat Leonardo haar portret zal schilderen zodat haar schoonheid voor eeuwig op doek zal bewonderd worden. Maar door de politieke ontwikkelingen in Italië, moet Leonardo zich spitsen tot andere taken dan het schilderen. Door oorlog en machtsvertoon van hun echtgenoten, groeien de zusjes D'Este dichter naar elkaar toe. Maar Isabella's hoop om voor Leonardo Da Vinci te poseren, verdwijnt niet. Haar liefde voor de kunst en Leonardo's werken groeit met de dag maar zal zij erin slagen om het genie Leonardo te overhalen haar portret te schilderen? Ik had verwacht meer te kunnen lezen over Leonarda's persoon zelf en zijn visies. Het einde van het boek is toch wat voorspelbaar.
